Comic Artist Day returns to Modesto store

A comic-book shop gets more folks through the door.

That’s the win-win-win-win scenario of Day, which is returning Saturday for the second year at Bonanza Books & Comics on McHenry Avenue in Modesto.

The shop has increased its roster of artists by one this year, bringing in six local guys to sign autographs, do demonstrations, answer questions and talk with fans about their work. In this tough economy, the event serves to promote the artists and the comic-book industry as the holiday shopping season approaches, said Bonanza Books owner Jeff Allen.

The artists who will be at the shop during Saturday’s event, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., are:

• Ethen Beavers — Artist whose work has included Justice League Unlimited, Titans Go!, Ben 10, Samurai Jack, Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures and Indiana Jones Adventures. His latest work is a Batman: The Brave and the Bold stand-alone issue titled “Trick or Treat!”

• Patrick Barr — Artist and writer on Sun Wukong: The Journey Continues

• Jeremiah Perkins — Artist and writer on Son of Lar

• Paco Galvez — Graphic artist

• Clay Atkin — Graphic artist

• Chad Pickrel — Web artist

Also appearing, between 10 a.m. and noon only, will be costumed “Star Wars” characters from the 501st Legion Central California Garrison. Darth Vader, Boba Fett, stormtroopers, clone troopers, Jedi knights and will greet visitors and pose for pictures.

The members of the 501st have arranged for a Toys for Tots collection bin to be out during Comic Artist Day, Allen said, and Bonanza will give a superhero pin to anyone who donates. Toys should be new and unwrapped.

The first Comic Artist Day kept the store packed and the artists busy, Allen said. Most visitors were simply fans, but “I would say we had 10 to 12 people who were interested in becoming artists themselves and brought along their work to have it critiqued,” he said. “Some of (the artists) are better at mentoring young artists, and some of them are rather young themselves, in their early 20s.”

Bonanza is at 2308 McHenry. to learn more, go to bonanzabooks.net.
