Economics is a very serious issue and something that everyone in our society should understand, thus it is paramount for it to be taught in schools and colleges. One issue, which seems to be evident is that all too often our educational system is teaching a socialistic form of economics, which almost makes profit seem like a bad word.

Indeed, we all know that there is nothing wrong with making a profit. Thus, it appears there is a problem with the way we teach economics and the reality of what is and how things work. it is so very important for professors, schools and educational institutions to drop their personal politics long enough to buy the textbooks on economics that teach the correct version of reality.

Let us look at a few of the textbooks of the past and consider how such books influence thought in our society;

1.) Economics of Social Issues (tenth edition) by Ansel M. Sharp, Charles A. Register, and Richard H. Leftwich – 1986

This book discusses social issues and economics and starts out with chapters such as: World Poverty Problems, Allocation of Resources, Analysis of Intervention on free markets. then it moves on to the economics of education, real costs, and future. next, it deals with income distribution models, government structures and what works best, as well as labor relations and resources. Inflation, deflation, stagnation, devaluation and how an economy can win and lose at all at the same time – taxation, national debt, trade deficits and protectionism also introduced and how these affect people.

2.) Choice and Change – an Introduction to Economics by William Dickneider and David Kaplan – 1978.

The title seems to indicate an introduction into free markets, much similar to Milton Freedman’s book. This book explains such principles as supply and demand, exchange values, trade, labor, debt, monopolistic power, inflation, trade, taxes, government spending, employment and how economic policy is made. it is indeed, an introductory text book to the study of economics. the chapters go into deep case analysis of historical events, politics and big business.

3.) American Economic History by Harry N. Scheiber, Harold G. Vetter and Harold Underwood Faulkner – 1976.

This book starts us out in the colonial times and the economics of the colonies, trade, mercantilism and how things changed after the revolutionary war. next it describes how agriculture came to be the major industry, how foreign commerce helped and how the government handled the role of banking. Transportation, slavery and industrialization were major components of the next era, all illustrated with case studies and historical facts.

The early industrial age speaks to labor movements, expansionism and America’s role in WWI. the market collapse, depression, WWII, and post war economy are explained in depth, along with unionism, regulations, and quality of life in a mixed and growing economy.

Many of the kids and students that used such textbooks in school are now Congressmen and women, who are running our government and spending our money. it seems there are some problems with their decisions and inability to control their spending. Apparently, they either did not do so well in their studies, or they were duped by problematic or lopsided economic theory.

Perhaps if we concentrate on the next generation of economic textbooks then the future leaders of this great nation will be able to a better job and more importantly the voters will understand who to vote for as well. Spending this great nation into oblivion and failing to maintain a balance of trade, by engaging in unfair trade with countries that take advantage of us – is causing conflict with the future economic prosperity of all we know and all we have built. think on this.

"Portraits in Jazz" will be showing from may 2 to may 31 at The Palace Hotel in Sliema. The exhibition is a panel of 20 black and white photographs featuring jazz artists from the last three editions of the Malta Jazz Festival. with the help of this exhibition, Abdilla achieved the associate membership of the Malta Institute of Professional Photography and the Society for Wedding and Portrait Photographers (UK). Abdilla’s background in photography is rich and varied. at the young age of 10, he started taking photos when a family friend gave him a 126-format instamatic camera to take with him on his first trip abroad. In 1990, when he was a scout, Abdilla was assigned to help the press centre set up for Pope John Paul II’s visit. It was then that he says his love for photography emerged. with the help of his grandmother Felicia, he bought his first camera, a Pentax P30T, a 35mm SLR. a year later, Abdilla joined the Malta Photographic Society and the Institute of Videography, where he continued to develop his skills. He sold his Pentax and replaced it with a Minolta Dynax 7xi, only to exchange that for a Nikon F801 in 1993. Abdilla was then appointed official photographer of the Malta Small Nation Games and he won his first competition. It was around this time that he started shooting jazz artists and the Jazz Festival. Having noticed that the AEB Board offered Photography A-Level exams, Abdilla started studying photography independently, studying from Langford’s Basic Photography, a book that he recommends to aspiring photographers to this day. He later took out his first loan to purchase photographic equipment – the Nikon F3 body and the 80-200mm F2.8 lens - which he still uses today. He expanded his portfolio to include weddings and press work. In the year 2000, work commitments forced Abdilla to drastically reduce his photography work, and it was only eight years later that he was able to return to his art. He switched to digital photography, first with a Pentax K20, and eventually with a Nikon D2x.   In July 2011, a motorbike accident left Abdilla with a broken knee, four months in crutches, and a lot of time on his hands. He took the opportunity to go through his existing work and decided to prepare an associateship panel. his wife and sister took him to last year’s Jazz Festival and he sought the help of a friend, Joe Smith, to guide him in developing the panel presentation. By the October Convention, it had been completed. Over the years, Abdilla has had work exhibited in collective exhibitions. In 2010, he planned an exhibition at Auberge d’Italie, but it was cancelled because the Ministry required the space. As a newly divorced woman in my forties, I am finding it rather difficult to get the hang of social networking websites. In the last three months I’ve tried MySpace, Facebook and MyYearbook. Out of the three, MySpace is the only one I still use with any regularity and only because my children also use it. Of course there are dozens more of these types of websites out there so I’m trying hard not to become disillusioned with the people I meet online.

Within the first week of membership with MyYearbook I had collected several offers of phone numbers, dinner invitations, and, you guessed it, sex. the first two I turned down as graciously as I could but the last simply made me angry.

Hello, are you nuts? I don’t know about all divorced women but the majority of us are not stupid enough to actually meet anyone we chat with on-line in person. especially when they make it perfectly clear what they’re looking for. If I were actually ready to date someone that I had met on-line I would not be shopping around on a website like MyYearbook or Facebook. If I were seriously considering internet dating I would try a reputable website like eHarmony. Dating is not my goal, finding others to talk with after a long day is.

Being single again is hard enough without being treated like a piece of meat by clueless males out to score. do I except too much? has the world changed so drastically over the years that it has become impossible to meet decent people on-line for a little conversation? And all this warped attention is not because I am a beauty queen. I am an average middle-aged woman. I am a mom and a grandmother. Brittney Spears I am not.

Out of all the men I have chatted with in the last few months, only one has shown himself to be witty, intelligent and a comic genius. This man also possesses something that none of the others seem to have ever heard of, manners. This does not mean I would or will run right out and meet him in person however. Prudence dictates caution in situations like these. Common sense and trusting ourselves to make the right decisions about the people we meet on-line is something many divorced or single women tend to ignore.

But there are steps we all can take to protect ourselves, such as setting up an ambiguous e-mail account or in some cases using the websites e-mail services. MySpace now provides e-mail for its members. MyYearbook offers a message service that is on site and tries to block members from giving out their e-mail addresses. And there’s always Yahoo or Hotmail if the others aren’t to your liking.

Keep your personal information to yourself. If you can’t join a social networking website without revealing every little detail about yourself then I would suggest you not join. Almost all social networking websites will have a section for you to fill out that requires your name, age or birth date, marital status, etc., and that’s fine but only as long as this information is not posted to your personal page. MySpace, Facebook and MyYearbook are all like this but they will allow you to filter your personal information so you can control what is shown to the general public. you can also choose to use a Handle, the Internet’s version of a false name.

Posting your photograph is another thing to be careful. I was shocked by some of the photos posted to the MyYearbook site and while they were not X-rated, they certainly were provocative and in some cases, downright suggestive. some of these same women went on to complain about the men they were attracting have some self-respect. do not post anything that could potentially embarrass you or damage your reputation. If you have children ask yourself if you would want them to see the photo you are about to place on the internet. Remember that millions of people will have the ability to look at that photograph and you never know where it will end up. Imagine posting something sexy and having your employer see it.

Social networking websites can be fun, entertaining and harmless but only so long as we remember that not everyone we chat with on-line is who they say they are. Predators abound on the internet. Caution and trusting your gut are two of the most important things we women have at our disposal and we should never be afraid of putting them to use.

Novi — Hundreds of comic book fans poured into the Suburban Collection Showplace Saturday for the second day of the 23rd Annual Motor City Comic con.

Among the guests at this year‘s event were stars from the comic world as well as iconic TV and film stars.

Some visitors dressed in comic hero costumes taking on the personality of their character. Connor Riegle, 18, of Dearborn Heights, dressed as Captain America of the Avengers. He made the costume for Halloween and decided to wear it for the convention for the first time.

“It’s a work in progress,” Riegle said of his costume.

Riegle met other Avengers, like Justin Roberts, 43, of Waterford who dressed as Thor. The two were frequently asked to pose for photos together.

“I didn’t expect so many people to ask,” said Roberts, who wore a costume to Comic con for the first time this year.

“I’ve always liked the Avengers,” he said. “The inspiration struck me with the new movie coming out.”

Roberts’ wife Mindy said she enjoyed people watching.

“It’s been great this year, just the good naturedness,” she said.

Freddie Nova, from Cleveland, portrayed wonder Woman. She said didn’t see as many people in costumes this year.

“I hope my chances will be better in the contest,” she said.

Ellie Harvey, 6, from Ferndale said it only took her a minute to dress as Hit Girl, a young vigilante, but her dad, Ray Hollifield, said it took him all morning to get the items for her costume.

“She’s a really good character,” said Ellie, dressed in a purple wig and black eye mask. “She’s a girl and she fights (bad) people.”

Among the celebrity guests to speak and greet visitors was Loni Anderson of the TV sitcom “WKRP in Cincinnati,” which aired from the late 1970s to early 1980s. Murray and Bonnie Pettit and their four children, from Sarnia chatted briefly with Anderson, who signed autographs and took photos with fans.

“They’re very nice,” Bonnie Pettit said of the celebrities. “We have a lot of laughs.”

Murray Pettit said his family likes visiting the conventions to meet the stars from older television shows. Their children Andrew, 15, Danielle, 13, Josiah, 10, and Matthew, 8, enjoy watching the shows, he said.

“This (convention) always has good people every year,” Murray Pettit said.

The Motor City Comic con continues 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. among the stars to appear are Christopher Knight, who portrayed Peter Brady on the Brady Bunch; Sean Patrick Flanery and David Della Rocco both from “The Boondock Saints;” Nichelle Nichols, Lieutenant Uhura from “Star Trek” and Dean Cain, Michigan native from “Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.”

The rich month of April at CSO Symphony Center was capped off with the best concert I’d seen there yet. My experience with Paco de Lucia was limited, but I knew enough to know that I’d likely be blown away. de Lucia is the world’s preeminent flamenco guitar player, an unquestioned virtuoso, and is often mentioned on short lists of the greatest living guitarists. And with my passion for seeing musicians of this caliber, this show was an absolute no-brainer. this was a concert I wasn’t going to miss and my instincts were right on the money. I’d never seen anything like this in my life. My eyes were sprung wide open to the possibilities of flamenco music.

The three pillars of flamenco, the guitar (toque), singing (cante), and dancing (baile) were all on display. But it wasn’t traditional flamenco or puro due to the fact that there was a whole band of musicians on stage. Drums, bass guitar, and keyboards aren’t typically found in flamenco music, but this concert was like flamenco-plus. Flamenco with some extra flair. The guitar, singing, and dancing were the crux of the show, while the other instruments served to fill in the overall sound and provide harmonies at all the right times.

As to be expected, de Lucia was clearly the main event. His billing as one of the all-time greats was confirmed as his playing was sharper than any razor could hope to be. But it wasn’t just the way he sounded, his demeanor was so easy and his movements all looked so effortless. His right hand would flow through various finger techniques seamlessly. From fingers pointing down, pulling on the string like a bass player, to fingers pointing up the neck like with a banjo, quick picking at flash speeds, to flat out flurries of six string strumming– there wasn’t a direction his strings weren’t moved or a surface of his fingers untouched by nylon. Watching him play the guitar felt like what it must have been like to watch Van Gogh paint. it was incredible. it was a master at work.

But the rest of the players took the entire show to the next level. The other major influences were the vocalists or cantaores, who traditionally serve as the heart and soul of flamenco music, but naturally took a back seat to de Lucia. Nonetheless, they utterly drenched the audience in passion, belting out these howling wails, cries of passionate despair. there was something about their voices that evoked imagery of being stranded out in an endless desert. it was this dusty heat of a sound, a true inspiration of synesthesia that transported me somewhere far south of Chicago. there is nothing in the world like flamenco vocals, it might sound weird in a video, but in person it’s captivating and altogether chill-inducing.

Though the most entertaining part of the show was the dancer, who took only a few short turns but managed to blow the audience away in short order (and performed well after my allotted 15 minutes of photography time). Seriously, this guy only performed for maybe 10% of the time, but earned like 75% of the total applause– he was breathtaking. His performance demonstrated both supreme coordination and outrageous passion. The nailed shoes on his feet created a breakneck rhythm that drove the music during his dances. it was like tapdancing but with so much more depth of movement. Rapid 360 degree spins, wild arm gesticulations, and a slick way of moving his jacket all contributed to dancing, once again, like I’d never seen before. The applause when he finished his little bursts was easily the loudest thing I’ve heard in the Symphony Center. Much like the cantaores, the bailaor had a knack for sweeping my existence away from my seat, away from any thoughts, and completely captivating my attention.

Even when the singers and dancer weren’t doing their thing, they were adding little bits of energy via clapping the rhythm, the so-called palmas. The gentle brush percussion melted beautifully with the palmas to always keep a danceable element to the music, despite its oft dramatic nature. The music itself was rigidly serious, but every once in a while one of the singers would chip in with a subtle vocalization, something like, “Aye Paco!” that put a lighter tone into the sound. it was these little details that almost seemed to bring the players closer together, like they were goofing around in someone’s back yard after a family dinner party. Somehow, some of the most emotionally-charged, borderline haunting music managed to retain an uncanny joviality. All told, this was an enrapturing musical display — driven by one of the greatest guitarists this planet has ever seen — that was as a perfect example of the beauty of world music. this was one of those shows where I left feeling lucky to have been able to be a witness.

The book was actually a bit of a chore to read through, and that’s never a good thing for media that’s supposed to be entertaining. so what went wrong, here? It’s difficult to put my finger on.at its core (and as it states on the book’s dust jacket), the book is about a war between the criminal lords of Gotham City. all sides are taking casualties, though a few seem to be rising to the top. Maybe there are just too many players on the board? We’ve got the Falcone family, a new Black Mask, Penguin, a [somewhat] reformed Edward Nigma, a resurrected Reaper, a new Catgirl, Catwoman, Batman and Robin (of course), Fright, and appearances by Batman’s friends and allies – Oracle and Huntress. while it’s uncommon for a comic book to have too many characters, this seems to be part of the problem with this book. The mystery isn’t mysterious because you get confused with all of the new characters. It just wasn’t fun like it should have been. and that’s just the first story arc – Life after Death.There’s a second story arc in this book, as well. The second storyline introduces a new character named Blackspell. The story is centered on The Riddler, though it ties in to other well-known Arkham Asylum inmates such as Firefly. again, the story-telling is a bit murky, and I can’t say I enjoyed the story, as a whole.at on the book is a mixed bag. When Tony Daniel is illustrating, the book is great. When some of the other artists have a go at it, it flounders a bit. overall, still above-average.As far as tony Daniel’s writing goes, this book was probably the weakest offering he has produced. though it had some decent concepts and good potential, the execution of the story, in full, was not good. I still have faith in the man, though, as some of the other stuff he’s done in recent years has been good. I know that his skills will continue to improve with time.at $19.99, a hardcover edition that collects eight issues would generally be considered a great deal. In this particular case, however, it’s no great shakes. If you’re like me and generally buy for the good read, this book will leave you disappointed. too bad. Dick has taken up his mantle, he has proven himself more than deserving after a long and troublesome journey internally and externally.It’s honestly hard to believe, at first thought, that anyone could effectively be Batman better than Bruce. Tony Daniel has proven otherwise. My only complaint is that character development is a little on the lacking side, that this story feels a little rushed. but I’m sure most would understand that getting used to a new pair of wings isn’t going to come out perfect.

This volume reprints DC Comics’ Batman issues #692-699. It is an interesting episode in the latest Batman saga, providing you are following the storyline. Dick Grayson has now become the Batman, following the disappearance of Bruce Wayne. The Batman Family are trying to keep the peace in Gotham in Batman’s absence, but not doing a great job of it. The Black Mask has reduced Gotham to a state of open warfare, the Falcone crime family is moving back in to town, and the Penguin is hoping to betray the Black Mask. this volume features the unmasking of the Black Mask and the resolution of his current storyline, and the introduction of a new protégé for the Catwoman. The second story, a two-parter, features the Riddler and the secret behind his recent conversion to a private investigator.The story and art are reasonable, though not exceptional, for a Batman volume.

I must say I’m disappointed with this one.The book was published as a mystery tale with “and you won’t believe who Black Mas is”. The problem is… the identity of the new Black Mask was revealed in another previous book (Batman: Arkham Reborn, if I’m not wrong).so, no real big mystery, no need for the book. That’s what I felt after reading it. There was no need for this book to exist except to give Dick Grayson an adventure as Batman.besides that the hardcover is a pretty edition. No extras at all, but when you take off the dust-jacket you can see some pretty art on the cover and back. is a spread taken out of the last chapter in the book. Paper quality is very good too.The art is SO good. I’m a big fan of Tony Daniel’s art. Simple as that. I hope I see more of him in the future as an artist.Taken that into account I suggest that, If you must (and only if you must) get this one but don’t pay full price. As I said before is not necessary for the Batman & Robin Grant Morrison run nor Batman Inc. nor nothing. is just an adventure and nothing more.

Australian author Anna Funder has taken out top honours at this year's Australian Book Industry Awards.

Her first novel, All that I Am, won Book of the Year and Literary Fiction Book of the Year at a gala ceremony held on Friday night in Sydney.

Funder, whose book was inspired by real-life events involving anti-Hitler activists in the 1930s, said she was honoured to win the award.

“It's a pretty intimate kind of book, so it's a frightening thing to put that out in the world,” she said.

“It's frightening to work on something for five years and then just cross your fingers. So, yes, I'm really, really thrilled but I'm also very relieved that people like it.

“This kind of absolute dictatorship exists throughout history and it exists now in all sorts of places. I could have written this story about China or about Libya or about Burma or anywhere where there are absolutist governments and there are people resisting them.”

Other winners included actor William McInnes and his late wife Sarah Watt for their non-fiction collaboration and Emma Quay for her children's book Rudie Nudie.

Kate Greville, children's writer Andy Griffiths and publisher of the year Allen and Unwin also scooped awards.

Sydney's Shearer's Bookshop won Independent Bookseller of the Year.

It was a night of celebration for the local book industry after a difficult year which saw store closures and a continuing battle against cheaper online retailers.

Australian Publishers Association president Louise Adler says despite the challenges, this year has produced excellent Australian work.

“The quality of what we've produced has been showcased both in the short-listings and in the eventual winners,” she said.

“We have survived and we shall continue to thrive. it was a night of inspiration and a night of recognising the huge talent that we have here.

“Both the writers, because they're at the heart of what we do, and their publishers and the printers that support us and the retailers that are so passionate about Australian writing and without whom, none of us would be able to survive.

One of Australia's best booksellers, Ann Poublon from Dymocks Booragoon in Perth, was recognised for her 30 years of service to the industry.

Bristol student enters national art competition

A student from the City of Bristol College has entered a national art competition after receiving encouragement from the editor of Illusion Magazine.

Simon James, a 28-year-old student at City of Bristol College, has entered Art Couture Painswick, a festival of wearable art taking place in the Cotswolds town of Painswick on 15 July.

Art Couture Painswick is a music and art festival which started off life as the Wearable Art Festival of Painswick; it is now in its third year.

Last year’s festival attracted more than 80 entrants to the wearable art competition and more than 4,000 visitors on the day. As well as featuring the artists and their creations the festival supports local businesses; offers opportunities for arts and crafts makers to exhibit and sell their work; attracts musicians and other performers to entertain the crowds and supports a number of selected charities.

The festival’s competition has categories for independent artists and designers, art college students and an open class which is divided into three separate age classifications; under 12s, 12-17 and over 18. there are separate classes for Head Candy and Body Art. the celebrity judging panel includes fashion designer Savannah Miller; milliner Stephen Jones; Mary Wing To, winner of the New Zealand World of Wearable Art; film and TV actress Emma Samms; designer Selina Blow; artist and sculptor Daniel Chadwick and luxury shoe and fashion accessories designer Beatrix Ong.

Body Art is a new category for this year’s festival, presented by Art Couture Painswick in collaboration with Charles Fox and Illusion Magazine. the magazine’s editor met Simon James on a recent visit to City of Bath College where she gave a guest lecture on the subject of body painting to Theatrical and Media make up students. She described him as being ‘super talented’ and told him about the competition, which has the theme of ‘celebrating Great Britain’.

Simon says “I am absolutely thrilled to take part at this year’s event; I can’t wait to showcase my design and see everyone else’s interpretation of this year’s theme!”

I think it’s really great to see a local Bristol student entering a national art completion, and could be the start of a long career in the art world.”
