Horse Racing – Words From the Wise – A Review

Anyone who has been connected with Horse Racing for any length of time will have a bag full of stories to tell and advice to give. however, in this modern age we tend to dismiss the thoughts of the previous generation convinced we know best.

When I was at Primary school we had print of an man sitting on a wall pointing out to sea. At his feet sat two boys looking up to him with rather bored heard it all before expressions. the picture was a copy of the famous Boyhood of Raleigh by Sir John Everett Millais. I was recently reminded of that picture when I was reading Words from the Wise a collection of the articles of Fenman taken from the Racing ahead magazine.

Fenman began writing for Racing ahead in September 2004 and wrote a monthly article until June 2010. the writer who is only known by his non de plume must be around 85 years old by now and has interested and involved in horse racing for over 60 years. all of the articles are full of interesting facts, thoughts and information and the book would be well worth its purchase price just for those. Yet Words from the wise contains something even more valuable than the articles.

Also in the paper back book you will find Fenmans Methods. These are basically simple micro systems that over the years have proved highly successful. the younger seen it all, done it all generation may well dismiss these as being too simple but they still work.

Here is an example of one of Fenman’s methods for Handicap races. look for any mounts of the top 3 jockeys at the meeting that are carrying less than 11 stone. if there is more than one qualifier back the mount of the jockey who has had most wins at the meeting. That is a very simple idea but at the time of writing the article that methods was showing a 67 points profit

There are 30 of Fenman’s Methods in the book and I am sure that many of them could easily have been sold as systems and cost considerably more than the 15 that the book costs. if you are interested in horse race betting and looking for an interesting read Words from the wise is the book for you. if you want a good collection of methods or systems that have stood the test of time then you should also grab the book while you can.
