S.T.A.R. Labs scientist, Dr. Virgil Adams, was a lonely soul. with no family or friends, Virgil’s closest relationship was with his pet parakeet named Josephine. Dr. Adams devoted his life to Project Nano, a test program designed to create technologically enhanced combat armor that would be impervious to all forms of attack – both physical and mental. but after failing to produce any results, Dr. Adams was removed from the project and replaced by Dr. Caldwell.
Angered at this betrayal, Dr. Adams absconded the nanosuit and held the entire Project Nano team hostage. Leaving his pathetic life behind him, the desperate doctor now only saw himself as Nano. Cyborg confronted the nanite-powered villain and was very nearly defeated – until Cyborg deduced the suit’s shutdown trigger word. It was “Josephine,” the only thing Adams cared about in his life.

The Calculator later hired Mammoth, Shimmer and Jinx to free Nano and Rumble from Alcatraz Prison. His true objective was to exact revenge on the Teen Titans, whom he blamed for the death of his son, Marvin. to this end, Calculator’s prison breakout would trap the Titans on Alcatraz Island, where where a nuclear-powered inmate would reach critical mass and destroy San Francisco. Calculator’s plan was thwarted when Eddie Bloomberg used the T-jet to fly the inmate away – at the cost of Eddie’s own life.
Nano is powered by his own self-designed nanosuit, which is composed of tiny blue nanites. Nano can control these nanites, which can morph into deadly shapes, deliver deadly shocks and invade complex computer systems.
