When many students think about heroes, they picture Marvel Comics characters like Superman, Spiderman or the fantastic four.
But heroes are all around us, whether or not they’re in uniform, said Lt. Col. John May, a U.S. Marine who spoke to children at Osborne Elementary School during a Veterans Day ceremony.
Some have fought in wars or are still fighting, while others might work in an office or as a military doctor.Some come home without an arm or a leg, May said. Others make the ultimate sacrifice and never come home.
“It’s important to thank veterans whenever you see them,” said May, a Sandusky native who has served as a pilot and worked at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, China. “Don’t just thank them on Veterans Day — thank them every day.”
The students gasped in unison when May showed them a picture of the rows of graves dotting the hillsides at the Arlington National Cemetery.
It can be sad to see a soldier’s grave or watch a military funeral, May said, but he reminded the students that it should also make them grateful.
“Don’t be sad when you see those graves,” he said. “Be happy that so many people were willing to make that sacrifice for you.”
