Savvy traveller: Nature’s poetry in motion

MUST DO     ONE of Korea’s best attractions, the Seoraksan National Park gets its name from Mount Seorak,  featured in many legends and famous paintings. Located in Sokcho, the park is one of the best places in the world for avid hikers or mountain climbers. go on the Seoraksan National Park Cable Car and ride up to the peak of Mount Seorak. from there, you can climb up to the top of another mountain and have a bird’s eye view of the mountain range.   If you are willing to balance the adventure with another landmark, visit the Giant Buddha also located within the park. you can buy offerings next to the statue while there is a small fountain holding pure spring water you can drink.  enjoy the cool atmosphere and breathe in the fresh air as you  marvel at the surroundings. AVOID     Don’t wear high-heeled shoes! best to wear shoes with good grip when you walk around the park. GOOD EATS     For some quick snacks, head down to one of the coffeeshops in the park to grab some churros (a pastry dusted with cinnamon and sugar) or mini melts (ice cream shaped like a ball). At Gangwon-do, check out the famous bibimbap (rice served in a stone bowl with an assortment of veggies and meat topped with egg yolk and seaweed) or some delicious bulgogi (a popular beef and soup dish). Like cream puffs? Try the giant cream puffs at Chuncheon Myeong-Dong street. TOP SHOP    The best place is Chuncheon Myeong-Dong Street with a variety of stalls selling cheap but quality stuff as well as delicious food at the many food courts and restaurants. there are plenty of good quality but cheap jewellery and body care products.   INSIDER TIPS       Mount Seorak is best viewed in either autumn or winter.  During autumn, you’ll see lovely trees with red and gold leaves while in winter, you can see the fresh mountain snow. Myeong-Dong street is best visited during spring and autumn because then the street won’t be too crowded and the shops don’t close early. The national park is beautiful in all the seasons.
