In the latest of Marvel’s Next Big thing press calls, the publisher revealed that Ultimate Comics the Ultimates would be adding some new blood: indie comics writer Sam Humphries. Starting with issue #10, Humphries will co-write with Hickman, in what Hickman called a “sheparding” process to prepare Humphries for full-time writing duties on the book. “Having someone like Jonathan watching over to make sure I don’t blow myself up with fireworks allows me to ignore the pressure and focus on making a great comic book,” said Humphries. “I’m looking forward to eating his brain and stealing all his secrets.” for his part, Hickman confirmed he hadn’t ever planned on leaving the Ultimates, citing it as one of his dream projects, but that an other opportunity had presented itself unexpectedly; one that he couldn’t pass up. What that project is remains to be seen, but it looks like Humphries will be the future of the Ultimates team. Though Humphries is best known for his work on the indie scene with books like our Love is Real and Sacrifice, he recently took a gig at Marvel writing John Carter: Gods of Mars. Ultimate Comics the Ultimates #10 is set for release in May.
